Game Overview

Abyss Hunters is an idle RPG by R2Games where you recruit heroes, explore the Abyss, and build a team to push ever deeper. All combat is auto-battled — your job is strategy: picking the right classes, skills, cards, pets, and gear.

Core Gameplay Loop

  1. Recruit Heroes — Start with one of each base class (Warrior, Archer, Mage). Recruit more via Orbital Beacons (gacha) or story rewards
  2. Push the Abyss — The primary PvE content. 8 regions, 500+ depth levels, bosses every region transition
  3. Build Your Town — Construct and upgrade buildings that generate resources and unlock features
  4. Equip & Upgrade — Farm equipment from Abyss drops, socket gems, roll affixes, enchant gear
  5. Collect Monster Cards — Equip one card per hero for massive stat boosts and unique passive effects
  6. Raise Pets — 1 active pet fights alongside your team; 2+ benched pets provide team-wide passive auras
  7. Arena (PvP) — Compete against other players' teams for ranking rewards

Your first team should be:

Slot Build Why
Tank Howl Warrior Forces enemies to attack you, protecting DPS and healer. Easiest tank to play.
Healer Healer Mage Keeps the team alive. Boar King's double-cast at ★3 is a massive healing spike.
DPS Poison Archer Highest F2P DPS. Poison bypasses enemy DEF entirely. Forest Queen card compounds damage.

This is the standard F2P team comp that works from early game through endgame. See Team Compositions for alternatives.

Progression Systems

Hero Progression

  • Level — Gained from combat experience in Abyss
  • Job Advancement — Base → 2 branches → 2 sub-branches each = 5 total paths per class
  • Skill Tree — Each path unlocks a unique skill with 5 upgrade tiers (2★ through 5★), each offering 2 branch choices
  • Peak Level — Endgame hero stat scaling (unlocked in Abyss Region 7)

Equipment

  • Drops from Abyss based on current depth (higher depth = higher level gear)
  • 6 equipment tiers unlock at depths 0, 6, 12, 18, 27, 36
  • Equipment has random affixes — reroll to get the right stats for your build
  • 4 equipment slots: Weapon, Armor, Ring, Amulet — each with 3 gem sockets
  • Red (S-rank) equipment has 5 affix lines: 2 top lines + 1 middle + 2 bottom lines
  • See the Equipment System and Affix Reference for details

Monster Cards

  • 4 quality tiers: ★1 (Green) → ★2 (Blue) → ★3 (Purple) → ★4 (Orange)
  • Each card has base stats (HP/ATK/DEF) plus unique passive effects that scale with star level (★1 through ★4)
  • Cards are the single biggest power multiplier — your build revolves around your card's passive
  • Class restrictions: some cards are class-locked, others universal
  • See the Card Reference for all cards and the Best Cards Per Build for synergy chains

Pets

  • 1 Active pet (fights in battle with active skill)
  • 2+ Benched pets (provide passive auras to entire team — this is where the real power is)
  • Pet quality: E → D → C → B → A → S (massive stat scaling)
  • Each pet has a unique passive talent with 5 upgrade levels, costing Gold + Fluid + Feed + Magic Crystals
  • Key passives to prioritize: Raptor (ATK Speed), Cave Spider (Poison Resist Shred), Small Bat (Heal on Hit)
  • See Pet Talents & Passives for all upgrade costs and effects

Gems

  • 15 gem types, each providing different stats
  • Type 1 gems (octagon shape): Weapon + Ring sockets — offensive stats (ATK, Crit, Element ATK)
  • Type 2 gems (donut/triangle shape): Armor + Amulet sockets — defensive/utility stats (HP, DEF, Resist)
  • Gems are combined 3→1 to create higher level gems. Never sell gems — always combine
  • See the Gem Guide for the full gem reference

Tips for New Players

  1. Don't spread resources thin — Focus on 3 heroes (Howl Warrior + Healer Mage + Poison Archer) initially
  2. Push Abyss as high as possible — Equipment level scales with depth, so every layer matters
  3. Invest in pet passives early — Raptor's ATK Speed passive benefits every hero on your team
  4. Save diamonds for card gacha — A good ★4 card is worth more than any amount of random shop purchases
  5. Use full Explorer Set early — Reform to Gold Find % for bonus gold + EXP until Chimera boss
  6. Check the shop daily — Gold shop refreshes with valuable gems and pet materials
  7. Join a guild — Guild features unlock additional content and rewards
  8. Don't waste Traces of Magic — Only use on cards you'll keep long-term (they don't transfer on card exchange)
